Petten, 23 January 2009
This week NRG has requested permission from the relevant authorities to restart the High Flux Rector in Petten. Following a large maintenance and inspection program in August 2008, the reactor did not start because a small gas bubble stream was identified in the primary cooling water system. Following this, a research program was performed into the cause, along with a detailed safety study. On the basis of this study extra technical measures have been introduced, such as the installation of sealing and detection systems; so that safe reactor operation can be assured. This has been confirmed by independent experts.
With an eye to the importance of the resumption of production of medical isotopes and the nuclear research program, NRG would like to bring the reactor back into operation as quickly as possible. NRG is also preparing to implement measures to increase the security of supply and maintain a high level of availability of the reactor for the longer term to assure the important role of the High Flux Reactor as a large and reliable producer of medical isotopes.
