D&D projects: Decommissioning the KSTR

The KEMA Suspension Test Reactor (KSTR), a small 1 MWth nuclear reactor, was build in Arnhem in The Netherlands. After shutdown the decontamination, decommissioning and dismantling were carried out between 1982 and 1991.

After post-operational survey and removal and transport of the fuel , preparations for dismantling were made. Before dismantling of systems outside the containment several important control functions were modernised and redesigned for the altered functionality. For the dismantling of systems inside the containment remote-controlled tools were built. On the basis of the final radiological survey the hall and compartments were released for other radiological purposes.

From 2001 to 2003 the last phase of the decommissioning (return to greenfield) has been carried out.
