D&D projects: Decommissioning of a radiochemical laboratory

NRG makes use of several laboratories for research with radioactive materials on its Petten site. When one of the older laboratories becomes superfluous in 2001, it is decided that the laboratory must be decommissioned. A project team composed of experts from NRG and ECN is appointed to perform the job.

The main steps in the project are:

  • preparation and inventarisation
  • selection of decommissioningstrategies
  • removal of unattached materials
  • 1st decontamination on the spot
  • removal of larger components and transportation to the dedicated decontamination facility
  • decontamination
  • measurements and categorisation of wastea
  • waste treatment; radioctive waste is transported to the Dutch organisation for radwaste disposal (COVRA) in Borssele.
Both radiological and industrial safety are monitored and controlled during the whole project. The project is safely completed within budget after six months. The laboratory gets a new destination.
