Waste Retrieval Unit (WRU)

The historical radioactive waste is stored in cans at the Waste Storage Facility. Most of these cans are in good condition. The state of a number of these cans that also had PVC (plastic) packaged inside at the time has however deteriorated.

To lift the corroded cans, a Waste Retrieval Unit (WRU) was developed. This WRU has special claws to retrieve the corroded cans, and any loose contents, out of the storage tubes in the WSF under safe conditions, and to package all this into a new can.

Before this Waste Retrieval Unit was put into use, the process of lifting out the cans was practised extensively.
