EDM - Electrical Discharge Machining

EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) technology is a machining method typically used for hard metals.

The method has many advantages compared to traditional machining:

  • It can be used with exotic metals like titanium, hastelloy, kovar, inconel carbide, Zircaloy
  • There is no force or pressure on the surface during machining. The material is kept free from internal forces
  • EDM can easily machine complex parts and precision components out of hard conductive materials
  • The method leaves no destructive fragments, like chips or splinters

The EDM technology is used by NRG for removal of reactor components:

  • Disassembling Fuel Rod Assemblies
  • Modifications in Fuel Rod Assembly Storage Pool
  • Removal of a corroded bolt in a reactor pipe flange
  • Removal of a thermo sleeve
