Training for coordinating expert (previously level 3)

The training for coordinating expert (previously level 3) focuses on acquiring knowledge, skills and competences in order to enable a coordinating expert to perform well. It is also suitable for specialised experts and consultants such as radiation physicians, policy workers and researchers. The course concludes with a nationally organised exam, supplemented with an additional ‘special part’. Each educational institution can introduce its own emphasis here. NRG applies this emphasis to the understanding of fundamental concepts.

Intended for
People required to act as coordinating expert, manager or supervisor working with encapsulated and non-encapsulated radioactive substances and equipment emitting ionising radiation with a radiation protection risk comparable to sources that may be worked with in a C laboratory.

Knowledge and experience
Participants must possess at least an HBO (higher professional education) diploma. Good knowledge of maths and physics is essential. Due to its scope, this course is considered ‘tough’ even by academics.

Programme
• Atomic and nuclear physics
• Radioactive decay and types of ionising radiation
• Interaction between ionising radiation and material
• Detection
• Biological effects
• Dosimetry and dosimetric quantities
• Standards and legal regulations
• Practical radiation protection: dealing safely with closed and open sources
• Communication
• Ethics

Maths Preparation for the coordinating expert training
For the course Coordinating Radiation Expert, it is assumed that you possess the necessary basic mathematical knowledge and skills, such as the use of brackets in calculating a division, solving for exponents, integrating simple powers of e, differential arithmetic and statistics. If this is not the case, we strongly recommend that you attend the course ‘Maths Preparation Coordinating Radiation Expert’.
During two half-day sessions, attention is paid to solving for exponents, integrating simple powers of e, differentiation of powers of e and statistics.
